Delilah Celebrates Halloween

Earlier in the season, I made a long list of everything I wanted to do this fall as a family, and we did actually do a lot of them. We did a lot of fun crafting and baking activities at home. We also took Delilah to the pumpkin patch to get her pumpkin. Though it’s kind of funny because we ended up having a longer day at the pumpkin patch when we took her last year as a little baby.

This year her nap and the day’s activities did not line up. She started acting sleepy while we were getting ready to leave for the day so I figured she would sleep on the drive and it would be perfect for arriving at the pumpkin patch. Unfortunately, that’s not how it went at all, because Delilah didn’t fall asleep on the car ride and was very tired by the time we got to the Pumpkin Patch. I’m talking about having a meltdown just walking from the car to the entrance tired, (we went back to the car to calm down and try again,). After that, we had a great time picking out her pumpkin, but in the end, that was short-lived before the tiredness took over again and we decided to call it a day.

Halloween was by far a much more successful event outing. I tried to keep our Halloween plans pretty open this year because I really wasn’t sure on how much Delilah would be able to handle for her age. She’s still pretty little for all this. My mom had told me how the city of Brownsville was doing a trick or treat street on the 30th, so we figure it would be perfect to test out how Delilah would do our trick or treating. I loved this event too because it was in the late afternoon so there was still plenty of daylight for a little Halloween practice.

Delilah had a great time. She was a little shy though, her dad and I had to carry her most of the event. A few times though she lit up and would take her treat herself. She really lit up when she got to pick out her own Hot Wheels Car (which she is now obsessed with and already has started her small collection). She also was very excited when someone handed her a little bag of popcorn. We were out for just about an hour and it was perfect. She didn’t get overwhelmed or fussy at all. Everyone had a great time and that made me feel so much more confident for actual Halloween the next day.

Now of course actual Halloween was a little more complicated because I ended up waking up super late and then still having to go to Costco for diapers. After all, this Delilah ended up a late nap and by the time she woke up, we had just enough time to get her dressed to go out trick or treating.  Thank goodness grandma was taking care of making dinner for everyone.

We decided to keep the night simple and drive back to Brownsville and trick or treat in one of the neighborhoods there. We found a nice long street and said we were going to try to just go up and down that street and then call it a night.  I was so worried that it wasn’t going to go well. She was still pretty sleepy when we were getting her out of the car. Again, she wasn’t really feeling like walking and opted for one of us to hold her instead.

The first few houses she didn’t really get what was going on, but it wasn’t upsetting her in any way.  We had decided that early on that as soon as she stopped having fun we would call it a night. We both agreed that the night was about her above anything else.

Even though she was slow to warm up she ended up having a lot of fun. It was so funny because she had this very visible moment where she realized what was going on and what these strangers were putting in her little pumpkin bag. After that moment she perked up a little bit and, even though she was still shy, she would still occasionally pick out her own treat from the candy bucket.
